Equatorial or universal dials

Sundial home page
The equatorial or universal sundial is the easiest dial to make. The gnomon is parallel to the earth's axis and the dial plate lies in the plane of the equator. The hour lines are spaced at 15°, so that the face looks very much like that of a traditional clock.
Types of Sundials

Make your polar dial with faces on both sides because in summer, between the equinoxes, the time is read on the front of the dial and in winter on the back.

The equatorial sundial has one limitation though; it does not work when the sun is on the celestial equator, i.e. during the equinoxes, because the sun's light falls on the edge of the dial plate.

The equatorial dial is a directional dial.
