More about Sundials

Sundial home page
Sundials are made from a wide variety of materials, mostly materials that can withstand exposure to sun, rain, snow, wind, heat and cold. Cardboard models are only suitable to illustrate how a sundial works or as preparation for the real thing.
Sundials are normally adorned with pictures and inscriptions. Most frequently used pictures are of course the sun and pictorial representations of the constellations.
Introduction

Mottoes on sundials are considered to be an art form in themselves. A whole collection of mottoes can be found at:
www.sundials.co.uk/mottoes.htm

Probably the two best known inscription are:

"I tell only sunny hours"

"Time is but a passing shadow"
Figure engraved into the base plate of an armillary sundial.
